If you have been part of a union before then you will likely already have an idea as to what benefits exist with regard to joining a union. If you have never had an affiliation with any labor union and are curious as to why it would be a good idea then you have “clicked” on the right spot.

When you discuss the benefits of a being part of a union it is important to realize not every International Union or every local is created equal. However, usually you will find that being part a union means being part of an extended family. You are part of a group who has the same interests, opportunities, challenges and benefits that you have. The key is you are not alone. You have representation.

Specifically, being part of Local 797 means you are in the middle of a union that is progressive in its design. To start at the beginning, we have one of the state of the art apprenticeship programs in the nation. Our three-year apprenticeship program takes individuals with little or no previous experience and makes them into outstanding cement finishers and plasterers. So, for the price of joining a union, you get premier training for a craft which you can use for the rest of your life, outstanding pay while you are learning, you accumulate outstanding benefits and you acquire college credit all at the same time.

There is also journeymen upgrading and cross-training available, free of charge, for those members who are interested in honing or expanding their skills. There are regularly scheduled programs in which certifications are given to people who complete certain safety training and qualify for certification on equipment use.

Although Local 797 is not the largest union in Las Vegas , it is certainly one of the most stable. At a time when many unions are scrambling to maintain their benefits our Local's trust fund has been extremely consistent and solvent.

The leadership of Local 797 has been consistently fair and aggressive in its representation of Local 797 members. Union meetings are held the second Thursday of every month and every member in good standing is not only allowed to attend but strongly encouraged to attend, participate and voice their opinion about issues which affect the Local. The financial records are completely open, thus alleviating any concerns of fiscal misconduct. Monthly newsletters are sent to all members, again to keep the lines of communication and information open.

It's not all work and no play with Local 797. We also have annual picnics and health fairs. This is just an opportunity for all of us to take time out of busy lives and get our families together and just relax, have fun and enjoy some great food. We are very progressive in our health care as well. We want to be proactive and not reactive when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Health fairs, health newsletters and a progressive staff are in place to help inform our members and their families of things they can do to not only maintain and/or improve their health, but also to save money while doing it.

Being part of a union means being part of a family. Being part of Local 797 means being part of a smaller, closely knit family with a common goal of having a healthy, prosperous and rewarding life for all of our members and their families.
